Plug Power locates European headquarters in the Ruhr region

The US fuel cell specialist Plug Power has chosen the Ruhr region as the location for its European headquarters. By mid-2022, 60 jobs are to be created there in engineering laboratories, technical customer support, logistics and training.

Exactly where Plug Power will be located in the Ruhr region will be announced at a later date. The company cannot afford to take too much time. This is because the Americans want to start operations at their new European headquarters as early as the beginning of 2022. This was made public by Plug Power CEO Andy Marsh and NRW Economics Minister Andreas Pinkwart at a joint announcement in Washington.

The first on-site facility will include an approximately 6,500-square-foot innovation center with technical laboratories and technical support. Also a center for monitoring, diagnostics and technical support, a green hydrogen generator with its own electrolyzer infrastructure, a center for shipping, innovation and logistics, and training facilities.

Minister Pinkwart welcomes the announced settlement, saying that hydrogen  is the key to the climate-friendly transformation of industry and the transport sector in North Rhine-Westphalia. “That’s why we set ambitious expansion targets in last year’s hydrogen roadmap, including the use of state-of-the-art fuel cell vehicles. To achieve these, we need strong and innovative partners like Plug Power.”

Commenting on the upcoming investment in NRW, company CEO Marsh said: “The expansion into Europe is a result of Plug Power’s growing customer base abroad and the increasing demand for green hydrogen energy. Green hydrogen plays an important role in overcoming our dependence on fossil fuels, and Plug Power is well positioned to meet the demands of customers who are ready to make that change.”

We remember: Just a few weeks ago, the company from New York State formed a joint venture called Hyvia with Renault. By the end of 2021, Hyvia (“Hy” for hydrogen, “Via” for road) already plans to offer three light commercial vehicles (LCV).

With the expansion to Europe now manifested by the establishment of the headquarters in NRW, Plug Power intends to “establish further relevant partnerships with leading companies in the field of hydrogen applications” in the future. On a selective basis, Plug Power says it has already made “progress in the area of hydrogen mobility” with European industrial companies, logistics customers and vehicle manufacturers. Several electrolysers with PEM technology have been installed in Germany, France, the Netherlands and Portugal.

Plug Power describes itself as a provider of turnkey hydrogen fuel cell solutions. By 2025, the company aims to produce more than 500 tons of green hydrogen per day. A goal that attracted a major investor this January: In early January Plug Power sharedSK Group is investing $1.5 billion and plans to establish a joint venture in South Korea by 2022 to jointly provide fuel cell systems, hydrogen refueling stations and electrolysers for the fast-growing Asian market.
